VW CEO BLUME: ELECTROMOBILITY WILL SOON BE SUPERIOR TO INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

VW

Volkswagen has already announced plans to invest around 120 billion euros in electromobility and digitalization by 2027. The CEO of the Wolfsburg-based conglomerate is also convinced that electromobility will soon surpass conventional internal combustion engine technology.

While CEO Blume considers the goal of phasing out combustion engines across Europe by 2035 to be ambitious, he believes it is achievable, as he stated in an interview with NDR. This would require primarily well-developed charging infrastructure and sufficient energy from renewable sources.

VW sees E-Fuels as a possible solution for existing vehicles

For the large number of already registered combustion engine vehicles that cannot simply be replaced, E-Fuels are seen as a possible solution in terms of climate protection. Blume does not see a direct conflict between electromobility and E-Fuels.

According to Blume, politics also plays a crucial role in promoting electromobility in Europe. He believes that a more favorable energy price for energy-intensive industries is necessary. In addition, the expansion of renewable energies needs to be accelerated.

Plans for new battery factories

VW recently announced plans to build a new battery cell factory in Canada, citing exceptional opportunities for raw material and energy partnerships with Canadian partners as a contributing factor in the location decision.

Moreover, plans for establishing new battery factories are also underway in Europe. The first one is already being built in Salzgitter, and VW officially plans for six more similar projects in Europe.
