Given the urgency to drastically reduce global CO2 emissions, this is a very welcome development.

However, many people still harbor mistrust towards electric cars. Either the range is too short, or there is no charging infrastructure available at their place of residence. The safety argument is also often heard, claiming that electric vehicles are prone to explosions or fires. But is that really true? Data from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) in the US has been analyzed, and the results are surprising in their clarity.

In 2020, there were around 200,000 fires in conventional combustion engine vehicles in the US, while there were only 52 fires in pure electric passenger cars. At the current time, the number of combustion engine vehicles sold still exceeds that of electric vehicles. When considering these numbers, it means that out of 100 registered combustion engine vehicles in the US in 2020, approximately 1.53 caught fire, while only 0.025 out of 100 electric vehicles in operation caught fire. This means that the likelihood of a fire in an electric vehicle was more than 60 times lower than in a conventional combustion engine vehicle.

Overall, the fire risk of electric cars is much lower than that of their combustion engine counterparts. This can already be deduced from the name itself. In a combustion engine, fuel is ignited, while a pure battery-powered vehicle has nothing to do with combustion processes that could pose problems, especially during an accident. In addition, battery manufacturers are constantly working on improving their battery chemistry to further reduce the risk of fires.

Interested in the topic of batteries?
